Video Equipment We Recommend For Home Podcast Studios

Published on: 27th November, 2023

Whether you already have a podcast or are just getting started, incorporating video into your podcasting strategy is becoming more and more important. I know most podcasters don’t get into podcasting to have themselves on video though, so to read this is probably painful for you. Most podcasters love the idea of audio only, because there’s a beautiful simplicity to it.

That was the way I felt too as a long-term audio geek.

But, not only does video improve the discoverability of your show, it also attracts a whole new audience that engages with your content in different ways.

I've personally experienced the power of video in podcasting through my own podcast, "Pump Up Your Pod." By creating video versions of my podcast episodes and uploading them onto YouTube, I've seen a massive increase in listenership. In just a few short months, we've already garnered close to 20,000 views on YouTube, compared to significantly fewer listeners on podcast platforms.

So, how can you get started with video for your podcast without breaking the bank? I decided to share a bit of the bonus content that we have within our DIY Podcasters program to step you through our recommendations. We provide recommendations for video equipment that will give you a professional-looking video without overwhelming you with technical complexities.

In this episode, I show you how.

If you're ready to take your video setup to the next level or if you're an online course creator looking to create course content, I highly recommend booking a video setup consult with us. We'll assess your space, provide equipment recommendations, and guide you through the setup process virtually.

Our DIY Podcasters Program

The DIY Podcasters program is designed to help podcasters elevate the quality of their shows. It's chock-full of valuable content, including video snippet creation, that can take your podcast to new heights.

So, if you're serious about improving your show, both in terms of audio and video, don't hesitate to check out the DIY Podcasters program. It's the best resource I've ever created to help podcasters like you enhance their podcasting production.

I hope this sneak peek into the world of video equipment for podcasting has been valuable for you. Remember, video is becoming an essential part of podcasting, and it's never too late to start incorporating it into your strategy.

Speaker:

Today, I'm giving you a little

Speaker:

bit of a sneak peek into some

Speaker:

of the bonus content that I have

Speaker:

within the DIY Podcasters program.

Speaker:

But this is going to be something

Speaker:

that's useful to you, even if you

Speaker:

have a podcast already, and maybe

Speaker:

even we're editing it for you.

Speaker:

If you're a client of BAMI Media,

Speaker:

or you have someone else doing your

Speaker:

editing for you, , the video side.

Speaker:

Of the conversation for podcasting is not

Speaker:

something that you can ignore anymore.

Speaker:

it doesn't mean you need to have

Speaker:

it all sorted for every episode.

Speaker:

It doesn't mean that you need to always

Speaker:

have a video, but it is something

Speaker:

that is definitely going to improve

Speaker:

the discoverability of your show.

Speaker:

And I'm seeing that firsthand

Speaker:

with creating this pump up your

Speaker:

pod podcast since having video.

Speaker:

And putting this podcast on YouTube the

Speaker:

listenership has seen a massive increase.

Speaker:

Even within a few short months

Speaker:

being on YouTube, for pump up your

Speaker:

pod, we've almost already got 20,

Speaker:

000 views of our podcast, like just

Speaker:

the podcast content on YouTube.

Speaker:

It's nowhere near that

Speaker:

number on podcast platforms.

Speaker:

And so when you create a video

Speaker:

as well as an audio relationship.

Speaker:

You see a whole bunch of

Speaker:

different audiences come together

Speaker:

that want to engage with your

Speaker:

content in different ways.

Speaker:

Another example of that

Speaker:

is a client of ours,

Speaker:

they have a podcast on podcast platforms

Speaker:

as you normally do and about a year ago,

Speaker:

we brought them onto YouTube as well.

Speaker:

And we are seeing a significant shift

Speaker:

from podcast platforms to YouTube.

Speaker:

So it's something

Speaker:

that's worth discussing.

Speaker:

And I know I've spoken about video

Speaker:

here before, and so I'm not going

Speaker:

to go into why it's great, because

Speaker:

there are different episodes

Speaker:

where you can go and look at that.

Speaker:

But what I want to give you now

Speaker:

is this bonus content that's in

Speaker:

the DIY Podcasters program that

Speaker:

shows you the video equipment

Speaker:

that we recommend for podcasters.

Speaker:

To start off simple, while

Speaker:

still providing a professional

Speaker:

enough looking video.

Speaker:

So I'm going to direct

Speaker:

you to the Bambi media.

Speaker:

com website, Bambi media.

Speaker:

com slash podcast dash equipment.

Speaker:

On that page is our recommendations

Speaker:

for what you should use for video.

Speaker:

If you scroll down, you'll

Speaker:

be able to see for video.

Speaker:

cameras, we have two options.

Speaker:

So again, we like to keep things as

Speaker:

simple as possible for different budgets.

Speaker:

We've got the face cam pro, which

Speaker:

is like a webcam that you can

Speaker:

use, but it is the best webcam on

Speaker:

the market at time of recording.

Speaker:

We've recommended this to some clients

Speaker:

who have bought it and just the

Speaker:

difference in quality is fantastic.

Speaker:

It's about 500 somewhere in that

Speaker:

price range, but it is well worth it.

Speaker:

Uh, and it also is just easy to

Speaker:

connect, to put on the top of your

Speaker:

computer or your laptop, like you

Speaker:

normally would for a webcam and just

Speaker:

get a better high quality result.

Speaker:

They do sell out quickly.

Speaker:

So it's something that I would

Speaker:

definitely have a look at.

Speaker:

Go and have a look on the website.

Speaker:

If you're interested in the webcam.

Speaker:

The other option I recommend is

Speaker:

having an actual DSLR camera.

Speaker:

So an actual camera that you use as

Speaker:

your webcam that you can use for,

Speaker:

, not just videos for YouTube and for

Speaker:

podcasting, but for all your Zoom.

Speaker:

Meetings as well.

Speaker:

It gives you that extra layer of

Speaker:

professionalism and looking fancy with,

Speaker:

again, not being a huge amount of outlay.

Speaker:

It's definitely more than the

Speaker:

face cam, but you get a, again,

Speaker:

higher level result from that.

Speaker:

So on that page, we've got the Sony ZV

Speaker:

E10, which means that you can switch out

Speaker:

the lenses as well, depending on the size

Speaker:

of the room that you're working with.

Speaker:

If that camera is around a

Speaker:

thousand dollars, uh, and there's

Speaker:

links to those things in there.

Speaker:

You also need a Cam Link, or some

Speaker:

way to connect that to your computer.

Speaker:

So Cam Link means it can receive 4K,

Speaker:

so it will be able to have the 4K

Speaker:

going straight into your computer.

Speaker:

ThEre's also the Rode Streamer X,

Speaker:

which makes it easy to do as well.

Speaker:

I don't want to overwhelm you with a

Speaker:

bunch of tech things, , but it would

Speaker:

be something that I would recommend,

Speaker:

especially if you're looking for an

Speaker:

upgrade in that higher level where

Speaker:

you maybe want to get a DSLR camera,

Speaker:

and go and look at the quality

Speaker:

that I have on the Bambi media.

Speaker:

channel, which I'll put the

Speaker:

links to here so that you can see

Speaker:

that's what I'm talking about.

Speaker:

So we use a Sony ZV E10 in this studio

Speaker:

room because it is a small space.

Speaker:

So go and check that out and then

Speaker:

you'll be able to see the kind

Speaker:

of quality I'm talking about.

Speaker:

And that may.

Speaker:

So you'll need some accessories with that

Speaker:

if you did the Sony ZV E10, uh, you'll

Speaker:

also need some sort of stand or tripod

Speaker:

or some way to have it be standing there.

Speaker:

I have a desk mount because it

Speaker:

attaches to the back of my desk.

Speaker:

I also have an AC cable.

Speaker:

that's really important because

Speaker:

otherwise you have to keep

Speaker:

charging your camera all the time.

Speaker:

And that's super annoying.

Speaker:

So if you can have it plugged

Speaker:

straight into like the AC outlet,

Speaker:

then you never have to worry about

Speaker:

it running out of batteries because

Speaker:

you're not relying on that anyway.

Speaker:

The next thing to think about, and if

Speaker:

you scroll further down that page, you

Speaker:

will see that there are lighting options.

Speaker:

Lighting is super duper important.

Speaker:

In fact, it's probably more important

Speaker:

than the actual camera that you're using.

Speaker:

The reason for that is that if your

Speaker:

lighting is good, then whatever camera

Speaker:

you have, It doesn't need to work so

Speaker:

hard to give you the desired result.

Speaker:

If you don't have good lighting,

Speaker:

then your camera has to work really

Speaker:

hard to try and make you look good.

Speaker:

so it introduces things like grain,

Speaker:

like you look grainy, uh, you look too

Speaker:

dark, your camera's trying to push too

Speaker:

much light in and it can't handle it,

Speaker:

uh, there may be color issues, you know,

Speaker:

there's a bunch of stuff that happens if

Speaker:

you just don't have your lighting sorted.

Speaker:

And so, uh, the first thing

Speaker:

I always recommend is...

Speaker:

positioning yourself where you've got a

Speaker:

window that is in front of you so that

Speaker:

your light is coming from a window.

Speaker:

But the only problem with just

Speaker:

relying on light from a window

Speaker:

is that if it's a cloudy day or

Speaker:

if you've got clouds moving, you

Speaker:

know, the light changes outside.

Speaker:

if that's all you've got, then the way

Speaker:

you look on camera is going to change

Speaker:

too, because it's variable based on

Speaker:

what is happening outside your window.

Speaker:

That's why we recommend having lighting.

Speaker:

And I've put a few different

Speaker:

lighting options on the website.

Speaker:

So you've got desk mounted lights

Speaker:

that you can get, uh, and I've

Speaker:

also included like a dome light, a

Speaker:

big light, which is what we have.

Speaker:

So we actually have three different

Speaker:

types, actually four different types of

Speaker:

lights here at Bambi Media for my setup.

Speaker:

And then Alex, who is in a different

Speaker:

studio has two or three different lights.

Speaker:

As well, , in his, because we see the

Speaker:

immense value in having appropriate

Speaker:

lighting for your set as well.

Speaker:

So those are some things

Speaker:

for you to think about.

Speaker:

, I would absolutely recommend going to

Speaker:

the bambi media.com/podcast-equipment.

Speaker:

page and sussing out what we have there.

Speaker:

And then a lot of what clients do, but

Speaker:

you don't have to be a client, , is if

Speaker:

you're looking at putting video in as

Speaker:

part of your process, or even if you're

Speaker:

an online course creator, someone that

Speaker:

doesn't have a podcast specifically,

Speaker:

or you don't want to put video in with

Speaker:

your podcast, but you want to be able to

Speaker:

create course content, things like that.

Speaker:

Then I would 100 percent recommend

Speaker:

booking in for a video setup consult.

Speaker:

With us.

Speaker:

So what is involved with that we'll get

Speaker:

an idea from you based on like, we'll

Speaker:

ask you to send a video of the room

Speaker:

that you're recording in, and then we

Speaker:

will liaise with you about the equipment

Speaker:

that's going to suit your space the best.

Speaker:

Then we will send you a list and say, you

Speaker:

need to go and purchase this equipment.

Speaker:

Once that equipment arrives, then we

Speaker:

jump on a consult with you for 90 minutes

Speaker:

or more, depending on how much space

Speaker:

you actually need to set it all up.

Speaker:

And we set it up with you virtually.

Speaker:

So that it's ready to go and it looks

Speaker:

good and we test it and we do all the

Speaker:

things so that has proven to Be extremely

Speaker:

valuable for people to just get someone

Speaker:

to help them set it up because that tech

Speaker:

stuff For a lot of people especially

Speaker:

for video is a bit Overwhelming.

Speaker:

It can be confronting if you don't

Speaker:

understand how to use any of that stuff.

Speaker:

So think about that.

Speaker:

Go to the Bambi media site, go

Speaker:

to the gear page, have a look

Speaker:

at what there is there, and I'll

Speaker:

drop a link in the show notes.

Speaker:

If you think like, I really

Speaker:

wanna get a video set up,

Speaker:

done, let's book in a consult.

Speaker:

You can do that there.

Speaker:

So that's just one of the bonus

Speaker:

content topics that I talk

Speaker:

about in the DIY podcaster.

Speaker:

program that is now

Speaker:

available for purchase.

Speaker:

If you're someone that's been producing

Speaker:

your podcast, yourself, editing it,

Speaker:

or you have a VA or someone doing it

Speaker:

for you, and you really want help.

Speaker:

You really want it to sound and

Speaker:

look better, then I recommend

Speaker:

checking out that program because

Speaker:

it's the best thing for sure that

Speaker:

I've ever created in this way.

Speaker:

Not so much for people that are clients

Speaker:

of ours already, uh, although we have

Speaker:

had a few clients jump in just to

Speaker:

learn about video snippet creation.

Speaker:

So if you're doing your own video

Speaker:

snippets, if you're in a package

Speaker:

with us, but you don't have us

Speaker:

doing your video snippets for you.

Speaker:

So there is a section within the

Speaker:

course that is just about creating

Speaker:

really good video snippets.

Speaker:

And so that is something that

Speaker:

some clients are actually jumping

Speaker:

in on to, to, uh, learn about

Speaker:

that and then get feedback from

Speaker:

us within that program there.

Speaker:

So.

Speaker:

Lots of different ways you

Speaker:

can interact at this point.

Speaker:

I hope that this little

Speaker:

video setup clarification is

Speaker:

valuable and helpful for you.

Speaker:

And when you think about how you're going

Speaker:

to improve your show into the next six

Speaker:

months, the next year, maybe a video is

Speaker:

something that you should be taking more

Speaker:

seriously, or maybe actually getting

Speaker:

into a program where you can learn

Speaker:

what you're doing with your production

Speaker:

at a higher level could be something

Speaker:

that's important for you as well.

Speaker:

Have a lovely day, and I

Speaker:

will talk to you again soon.
