Exploring the Shure MV7 Microphone: Analysing Plosives, Sibilance, and Sound Quality
As a podcast producer, I’m acutely aware of how crucial it is to have a reliable and high-quality microphone. As an avid user of microphones for over 15 years, first as a musician in the studio, and now in podcasting, I feel it’s my duty to give you some guidance and stop you from buying trashy equipment.
In this review, I will walk you through my experience with the Shure MV7, touching on its build quality, sound performance, and overall suitability for different recording scenarios.

Today we're bringing a review to you,
Speaker:this microphone right here, the Shure
Speaker:MV7 I did a podcast Battle between
Speaker:the Shure MV7 and the Rode PodMic.
Speaker:They have the same inputs.
Speaker:They're about the same price point.
Speaker:And I wanted to do a review of
Speaker:this one by itself as well, so
Speaker:that you could have a listen to it.
Speaker:If it's a microphone that you're really
Speaker:looking at potentially buying, or you
Speaker:have it already and you want some advice
Speaker:on how to use this one effectively.
Speaker:the Shure MV7 is a dynamic microphone
Speaker:that has both the XLR and the USB input.
Speaker:I'm going to try both of those things
Speaker:on for size today so that you can
Speaker:listen to the difference of both
Speaker:of these inputs stay tuned because
Speaker:I'm going to give you my advice,
Speaker:my feedback, my recommendations.
Speaker:And we're also going to get a male
Speaker:voice in here as well, so that you
Speaker:can see how it handles a duper voice
Speaker:versus a high pitched ish voice, The
Speaker:pop filter comes off really easily,
Speaker:but the thing I will say about this
Speaker:is I don't think it's good enough.
Speaker:It doesn't feel foamy enough.
Speaker:That's kind of a weird thing to
Speaker:say, but it just doesn't feel
Speaker:very like, uh, sturdy, you know?
Speaker:So it comes on and off really
Speaker:easily, which is fine, but I
Speaker:just don't think it's that great.
Speaker:So let's jump into a few tests that
Speaker:I like to run with microphones.
Speaker:First thing we're going to test
Speaker:is how it handles plosives and
Speaker:how it handles s's, sibilants.
Speaker:whether there's like a high frequency
Speaker:that's kind of annoying and how it
Speaker:handles those poppy sounds as well.
Speaker:Popping the popcorn and
Speaker:sizzling the sausages.
Speaker:You can see it's off axis here as well.
Speaker:Now if I bring this around to
Speaker:the front, Popping the popcorn
Speaker:and sizzling the sausages.
Speaker:How did that sound for you?
Speaker:Okay, so that's in the XLR input.
Speaker:Now we're going to sing a little
Speaker:bit into the microphone off axis.
Speaker:Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high.
Speaker:And then I'm going to go back.
Speaker:There's a land I heard
Speaker:in the la la is Alex.
Speaker:I've provided him with a lovely sentence.
Speaker:So, here it goes.
Speaker:Please provide a stinky sandwich.
Speaker:Please provide a stinky sandwich.
Speaker:then now I want just like,
Speaker:I don't know, Now we have it
Speaker:plugged in via the USB input.
Speaker:There are a few little things
Speaker:that you need to make sure that
Speaker:you set up when you first plug in
Speaker:the microphone in the USB format.
Speaker:Namely making sure that the right
Speaker:input is selected for the computer.
Speaker:so you have to go into sound
Speaker:settings of your computer, PC or
Speaker:Mac, and you have to find it in your
Speaker:inputs, once you've plugged it in,
Speaker:select it, and then it will work.
Speaker:You can also adjust the level
Speaker:of it within the sound settings
Speaker:on your PC or Mac if you have a
Speaker:slider that you can change, but you
Speaker:can also adjust the level of it.
Speaker:On the microphone itself,
Speaker:now I'm going to do my plosive and
Speaker:sibilance test, popping the popcorn and.
Speaker:Sizzling the sausages.
Speaker:Popping the popcorn and
Speaker:sizzling the sausages.
Speaker:L is for the way you look at me.
Speaker:Oh, is for the only one I see.
Speaker:Okay, so that's that.
Speaker:Now we're going to get
Speaker:the male voice back in.
Speaker:I need Please provide a stinky sandwich.
Speaker:Please provide a stinky sandwich.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:So this is where I would
Speaker:have to have the microphone.
Speaker:It needs to be on an off axis about here.
Speaker:If I get much further away, It
Speaker:doesn't sound very good, does it?
Speaker:And this is what a lot of the
Speaker:mistake that people make with
Speaker:microphones is that they put them
Speaker:too far away from their faces.
Speaker:Now, if we do almost on top of it here
Speaker:with this one, this is creating the
Speaker:proximity effect, which is actually
Speaker:quite intense for this microphone.
Speaker:It's going to give me a lot of bassy
Speaker:bottom end, and some people really like
Speaker:that sound A lot of that ASMR vibe is
Speaker:going to come from being really close
Speaker:to the microphone, but you have to make
Speaker:sure that the microphone can handle it.
Speaker:This microphone is not
Speaker:good in that setting.
Speaker:Can you hear that there
Speaker:is a lot of breath?
Speaker:it's like every time I have a T or
Speaker:a B or a P or an S, there's a lot of
Speaker:extra interruption with the microphone.
Speaker:So I don't suggest using a
Speaker:microphone like this if you want
Speaker:that really close vibe, because
Speaker:it just sounds a little bit shmeh.
Speaker:I'm off axis so that the
Speaker:pop isn't a big deal.
Speaker:It's still a little bit of a deal.
Speaker:But it's not as bad as it is if I'm
Speaker:on like this, and then I'm popping
Speaker:the popcorn, popping the popcorn.
Speaker:So it's a little bit less
Speaker:brutal on the side like this.
Speaker:Let's go through my overall
Speaker:recommendation for this microphone
Speaker:and how I feel about it.
Speaker:what do I like about this microphone?
Speaker:I like that it's compact.
Speaker:I like that it has XLR and USB input.
Speaker:I like that it has an app that means
Speaker:that you can adjust things yourself
Speaker:in there, which is fantastic.
Speaker:and it's not hard to set up.
Speaker:It's easy to get going.
Speaker:It's great for a DIY podcaster.
Speaker:I don't like that it
Speaker:sounds a little bit muddy.
Speaker:I have to get it in like the
Speaker:perfect spot for me to not
Speaker:sound a little bit too low end.
Speaker:I also don't like the placement of these
Speaker:lights and the way that you have to
Speaker:touch them to make it move I just find
Speaker:that kind of silly that it's there.
Speaker:I think that it's fantastic for
Speaker:those that are looking for a
Speaker:microphone that can have longevity.
Speaker:Maybe you start with USB and you work
Speaker:your way up to the XLR format, but
Speaker:it is not my favorite microphone.
Speaker:I've definitely recommended this
Speaker:microphone to some of our clients,
Speaker:depending on the type of voice that
Speaker:they have and the recording environment.
Speaker:I can recommend different microphones
Speaker:for different people and they sound
Speaker:great with this microphone as well.
Speaker:I have other reviews that I've
Speaker:done on other microphones.

Speaker:that content, go to our channel
