So I recorded an episode at the end
Speaker:of last year, where I told everybody
Speaker:not to take a break from podcasting
Speaker:over the Christmas and January period.
Speaker:And then.
Speaker:I had batched all this content.
Speaker:It was all ready to go.
Speaker:It was all ready to be edited.
Speaker:I had a production schedule that I was
Speaker:working through for our podcast as well.
Speaker:And I had all this stuff that was
Speaker:coming out over the Christmas period.
Speaker:And you know what?
Speaker:We couldn't physically get to
Speaker:the editing of our own stuff.
Speaker:We actually landed a musical that we
Speaker:had to edit in the last, like two weeks
Speaker:before we were going to go on holidays.
Speaker:And then that just meant that everything
Speaker:else that we had planned for our own
Speaker:stuff to actually get our editing done.
Speaker:Completely got thrown out
Speaker:the window because we had to
Speaker:get this other thing done.
Speaker:It was a project that, uh, it had
Speaker:been with us technically since August,
Speaker:but we had been waiting on other
Speaker:people to get the things to us that
Speaker:we needed in order to finalize it.
Speaker:And then they just didn't get it to us.
Speaker:It was really frustrating.
Speaker:They didn't get it to us until the
Speaker:very last moment we were hounding them.
Speaker:There was emails back and forth.
Speaker:Anyway.
Speaker:It was very frustrating in the end
Speaker:and it just meant that as a production
Speaker:company, we weren't able to get to the
Speaker:stuff that we wanted to get to for our
Speaker:own show prior to going on holidays.
Speaker:And then of course we didn't want
Speaker:to do it in our holidays as well.
Speaker:So yeah.
Speaker:This means that this episode today
Speaker:is something that should have been
Speaker:released before the end of the
Speaker:year, hence the name Behind the
Speaker:Scenes of Bambi Media in 2024.
Speaker:I'm going through my reflections of what
Speaker:2024 was like, and you know, it's still
Speaker:relevant, of course, I'm still going to
Speaker:release it, but I just wanted to say at
Speaker:the front of this episode, Hey, I know
Speaker:this probably would have made more sense
Speaker:if you listened to it a couple of weeks
Speaker:ago, but we just couldn't get to it.
Speaker:So I hope you still find value.
Speaker:I hope it's a nice little sneak
Speaker:peek, sticky beak into what Bamboo
Speaker:Media is like as a company and what
Speaker:our pros and cons were for the year.
Speaker:So yeah, let's just get straight
Speaker:into it and thanks for being here.
Speaker:Welcome to my recap of 2024.
Speaker:I'm going to go through some pros, and
Speaker:then I'm going to go through some cons.
Speaker:The biggest pro I have to talk
Speaker:about, and it's probably also a
Speaker:con, but we're going to put it
Speaker:in the pro column as well, is AI.
Speaker:AI has been a massive pro here for
Speaker:us at Bambi because it's really just
Speaker:helped us do our job a lot better.
Speaker:You know, people talk about AI
Speaker:taking their jobs and things,
Speaker:and that's definitely happening.
Speaker:That's a huge deal for a lot of people.
Speaker:But for us in the industry that we're
Speaker:in, especially at this time anyway,
Speaker:who knows the future, it really
Speaker:has just helped us deliver better.
Speaker:product, like a better
Speaker:service to all our clients.
Speaker:AI is really helping us achieve better
Speaker:results when we get given audio, that
Speaker:kind of sucks, also helping us just
Speaker:like reframe things, write better,
Speaker:develop better content ideas, help us
Speaker:with strategies and things like that.
Speaker:It, you know, it only does a small
Speaker:amount of what we do, but it gets
Speaker:us over that hurdle, that first
Speaker:step that can sometimes be half an
Speaker:hour or an hour, just trying to.
Speaker:Brainstorm things.
Speaker:If you've got AI helping you,
Speaker:it definitely reduces the
Speaker:amount of brainstorming time.
Speaker:And it often triggers
Speaker:those creative ideas.
Speaker:Just having a robot to bounce off of,
Speaker:it seems weird to say that it is true.
Speaker:So the first pro is AI.
Speaker:I've also found that it's been a much
Speaker:calmer year and a lot of people have
Speaker:seen that as a negative, as far as, you
Speaker:know, maybe reduced revenue, people not
Speaker:buying as much, all that sort of thing.
Speaker:We haven't seen that in our business.
Speaker:Uh, it's been a great year as far
Speaker:as revenue is concerned, but I've
Speaker:just found that It's actually
Speaker:just karma because I think the
Speaker:processes that we have are so good.
Speaker:The systems that we have are so good.
Speaker:The boundaries that we set are so good.
Speaker:And so it's meant that there has
Speaker:been less things that go wrong.
Speaker:I'm now in this business.
Speaker:almost 10 years.
Speaker:And I've had employees now for probably
Speaker:five, maybe five of those years.
Speaker:And every year it gets less
Speaker:ridiculous as in like, Oh crap,
Speaker:now we need a process for this.
Speaker:Oh, Oh no, we've never
Speaker:encountered that before.
Speaker:Like, how do we fix that?
Speaker:How do we change that?
Speaker:How do we evolve?
Speaker:There's been less of that that's needed
Speaker:because the structure and how we run
Speaker:everything is so like, You know, it's so
Speaker:like concrete that it's made it calmer.
Speaker:I'm not constantly trying to reinvent
Speaker:the wheel or think of new things
Speaker:or think of how we're going to do
Speaker:this thing because a lot of it has
Speaker:been set up in a really great way.
Speaker:That's been a real positive.
Speaker:It's definitely meant
Speaker:that there has been.
Speaker:been just a calmer vibe.
Speaker:So that's just, let's just take a
Speaker:pause on that calm for a minute and
Speaker:just remember that because at this
Speaker:time of year, it is not calm at all.
Speaker:And, uh, as much as I love that,
Speaker:I like reflecting on the fact that
Speaker:overall it has been really calm.
Speaker:Piggybacking off of that, it's also
Speaker:meant that there has been no, or I would
Speaker:have to count maybe on one hand, the
Speaker:amount of times that I've personally
Speaker:had to work nights or weekends.
Speaker:For so many years in my
Speaker:business, that has been the case.
Speaker:So from when it first started, you know,
Speaker:I was working in between nap times of
Speaker:children and I was working nights and
Speaker:yeah, I was working weekends and I was
Speaker:just working whenever I could because
Speaker:there was so many things, so many
Speaker:distractions, so many ways that I was
Speaker:being pulled in all these directions
Speaker:that I just I had to finally, I don't
Speaker:have to, if I want to, I can, there's
Speaker:always more things that I can do.
Speaker:Sometimes I really feel like
Speaker:working on something and it's at
Speaker:nighttime, but that's so rare.
Speaker:And so it's meant that I've been reading
Speaker:way more, I've read way more books,
Speaker:I've been writing songs again, I've
Speaker:been like sitting at my piano more and
Speaker:just, oh, there's just all that stuff
Speaker:has been so much better this year.
Speaker:And also, as I said.
Speaker:In, uh, an episode that I released kind
Speaker:of towards the end of last year, I got
Speaker:an Apple watch and that completely,
Speaker:like literally, I'm not even joking.
Speaker:It literally changed my life because
Speaker:I went from having a phone that I was
Speaker:always using to not needing a phone and
Speaker:not scrolling social media or checking
Speaker:my emails or doing all the things.
Speaker:I didn't do any of that.
Speaker:I just have this and I check
Speaker:my emails and things when
Speaker:it's appropriate to do so.
Speaker:So my mental health has absolutely
Speaker:improved because of this Apple
Speaker:Watch and having systems in place
Speaker:that I don't have to work so hard.
Speaker:I don't have to work so hard anymore.
Speaker:I just have a much nicer.
Speaker:We also really started our YouTube
Speaker:channel at the beginning of 2024.
Speaker:That has been such a massive pro.
Speaker:I have loved it.
Speaker:I'm here on video as well.
Speaker:I just love it so much because the
Speaker:comments that we get, like the feedback,
Speaker:the community that we're building,
Speaker:we're going to be monetized really
Speaker:soon, which is, I mean, that's cool.
Speaker:Like that's a fun little thing to work
Speaker:towards to get that thousand subscribers,
Speaker:to get that 4, 000 watch hours.
Speaker:And that, yeah.
Speaker:Has been really cool to track
Speaker:the analytics behind that.
Speaker:Also the income that's being
Speaker:generated from YouTube, the
Speaker:YouTube channel isn't monetized.
Speaker:That's from people engaging with
Speaker:our services after watching us on
Speaker:YouTube or after seeing some snippets
Speaker:that we've shared on LinkedIn, that
Speaker:all is repurposed stuff from the
Speaker:YouTube channel, from the podcast.
Speaker:We've made thousands of dollars from
Speaker:YouTube so far without brand deals,
Speaker:without anything, without being
Speaker:monetized because we have a channel
Speaker:that We already have offerings.
Speaker:We already have ways that people
Speaker:can, can reach us, can work with us.
Speaker:And so that was something I knew
Speaker:coming into YouTube because I've
Speaker:worked on enough shows to know that
Speaker:already, that that may be the case.
Speaker:So it's cool that that actually
Speaker:has come to light as well.
Speaker:It's a lot of work.
Speaker:Don't get me wrong, it's a lot of
Speaker:work to have a YouTube channel.
Speaker:I'm fortunate, we're fortunate,
Speaker:because we are a podcast and
Speaker:video production company.
Speaker:It's all in house here, so it does cost
Speaker:money still, but not in the same way.
Speaker:Also really happily launched
Speaker:our free podcast audit.
Speaker:That's been just really great to
Speaker:see people taking advantage of.
Speaker:You can submit your show for free,
Speaker:and it allows me or someone from
Speaker:my team to discover a new show.
Speaker:To listen to a new show and to
Speaker:get strategic around what we
Speaker:think they could do, to do better.
Speaker:And it's not our full consults.
Speaker:It's not a big strategy,
Speaker:but it's a free audit.
Speaker:And it's been a really nice way to get
Speaker:people in to be like, Hey, it's okay.
Speaker:Like just we'll give you some
Speaker:feedback and you can grow from there.
Speaker:So that has been really good for that.
Speaker:It's also generated income as well,
Speaker:where people do the free audit, and
Speaker:then they sign up to work with us.
Speaker:That's really cool.
Speaker:And not, Actually something
Speaker:I was focused on at all.
Speaker:I really just wanted to listen
Speaker:to more shows and I wanted
Speaker:to give people feedback.
Speaker:That's a happy by product of
Speaker:something that we wanted to do anyway.
Speaker:So that's been really good.
Speaker:A pro has also been
Speaker:training team in new skills.
Speaker:This has been a pro and also a necessity.
Speaker:We can't just do the same things
Speaker:that we were doing before.
Speaker:I can't have a team that's not
Speaker:diverse because we operate a
Speaker:small team and I have no interest
Speaker:in operating a large team.
Speaker:I need people that work in BAMU
Speaker:Media that are intelligent, creative,
Speaker:and willing to learn new skills.
Speaker:And it's not like you can
Speaker:go to uni and get a BAMU.
Speaker:Podcast editing degree, like you
Speaker:can get an audio editing degree,
Speaker:but there's nuance in podcasting.
Speaker:And so people that come to
Speaker:me, people that work with me
Speaker:often don't have the skills.
Speaker:They don't have all the skills
Speaker:that I need them to have,
Speaker:but they need to be ready.
Speaker:They need to be willing.
Speaker:They need to be the kind of personality
Speaker:that will Learn that wants to learn that
Speaker:wants to grow that wants to experience
Speaker:new things that wants to be challenged
Speaker:And so i've really enjoyed that this
Speaker:year where i've thrown things at them
Speaker:and be like you got to learn this.
Speaker:You got to learn how to do this
Speaker:and they've been yeah, cool, we'll
Speaker:learn it and it sucks for a while
Speaker:because you know, they're not good
Speaker:at it straight away and No one's
Speaker:good at anything straight away.
Speaker:It's it's Something that is hard to do.
Speaker:So I've enjoyed giving them more things
Speaker:to do, training them in new things
Speaker:and seeing them develop the skills.
Speaker:Because I know that more skills
Speaker:is always a good thing, no matter
Speaker:where you go, no matter what you
Speaker:do, no matter who you work for next.
Speaker:If you happen to leave, you
Speaker:have skills that you can use.
Speaker:So that has been.
Speaker:Awesome.
Speaker:We also welcomed a heap of
Speaker:fantastic new clients this year.
Speaker:Ones that are really aligned, ones
Speaker:that are on packages that allow
Speaker:us to do a lot more for them.
Speaker:It used to be that all I was doing,
Speaker:all we were doing was audio editing.
Speaker:We were just editing things and
Speaker:just putting them up on podcast
Speaker:platforms, which is very satisfying.
Speaker:Like it's, it's much easier to do, but
Speaker:the fact that we have clients and so
Speaker:many of them that package things up,
Speaker:that want us to help them repurpose,
Speaker:that want us to do video snippets,
Speaker:that want us to write really good
Speaker:articles, want us to share things on
Speaker:LinkedIn for them, for YouTube, for
Speaker:all these things, it just means that
Speaker:we're allowed to be more invested.
Speaker:In what they're doing and the
Speaker:outcomes that they're receiving and
Speaker:I personally really value that We
Speaker:don't take on heaps of clients again.
Speaker:I want to keep this team small.
Speaker:I want to keep like the this the sphere
Speaker:of People that we're working with to a
Speaker:to a manageable level to a level where we
Speaker:can really be More hands on and so when
Speaker:we do get clients that I feel like really
Speaker:work They want to improve And we're able
Speaker:to help them improve because they're
Speaker:on packages that allow us to do that.
Speaker:So that has been a definite plus.
Speaker:And then in the same way, also a
Speaker:plus, a pro is that we've lost clients
Speaker:that aren't like that, that have,
Speaker:you know, teeny tiny budgets and that
Speaker:need to scrimp and save and can't.
Speaker:You know, invest.
Speaker:And I get that massively.
Speaker:I understand that people have to
Speaker:leave, that people's, you know, needs
Speaker:shift, that the way they need to do
Speaker:things shifts, that maybe they bring
Speaker:a VA in house and then they think
Speaker:they'll just get the VA to do things.
Speaker:All of this is valid.
Speaker:All of this is completely
Speaker:fine for us as a business.
Speaker:It's just nice that that transition
Speaker:is best for everybody, I think,
Speaker:is what I'm trying to say there.
Speaker:So the pro there has been really good.
Speaker:We've been able to fly interstate
Speaker:this year and help with
Speaker:podcast, setting up recording.
Speaker:We've been able to go to studios
Speaker:in different cities and, you
Speaker:know, be creative director.
Speaker:We've been able to go to clients houses,
Speaker:set up all their equipment, showcase
Speaker:things for them, record tutorials.
Speaker:The travel element of this
Speaker:year has been really fun.
Speaker:I sit.
Speaker:here almost every day, all day.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:When I get a chance to go outside,
Speaker:like to go somewhere and meet
Speaker:clients and help them with this stuff
Speaker:in person and get paid to do it.
Speaker:Like what?
Speaker:You know, it's, it's so nice.
Speaker:It's really, really a beautiful thing.
Speaker:So going into state and being able
Speaker:to share that time with my partner
Speaker:as well has been really, really good.
Speaker:I've judged and attended the
Speaker:Australian Podcasting Awards,
Speaker:which is always a good time.
Speaker:The awards were fun.
Speaker:As usual, the judging process was great.
Speaker:There are challenges with that
Speaker:method, and maybe I'll do that
Speaker:in another episode at some point.
Speaker:But I think being able to
Speaker:highlight podcasters, listen to
Speaker:their shows and Really dive into
Speaker:them has been very rewarding.
Speaker:Like it's such a rewarding thing to be
Speaker:able to give back and judge shows and
Speaker:give them some constructive feedback.
Speaker:So I've really loved that.
Speaker:And then also being able to fly down
Speaker:to Sydney, go to the award ceremony,
Speaker:meet some people again, catch up
Speaker:with clients who were shortlisted.
Speaker:That was all just such a fun time.
Speaker:I have two more pros.
Speaker:One of them being that we've helped
Speaker:clients achieve significant growth.
Speaker:And we have that data because
Speaker:we have certainly the ones that
Speaker:we do a lot for and that are
Speaker:on like our podcoach packages.
Speaker:It means that we track everything, like
Speaker:not just their podcast downloads, but
Speaker:we look at what their LinkedIn and what
Speaker:their Instagram and what their YouTube's
Speaker:doing and all these different platforms.
Speaker:And we look at how those things are
Speaker:going over time, the comments that
Speaker:they get on articles, you know,
Speaker:how website traffic, like all this
Speaker:stuff seen significant growth.
Speaker:That is so cool.
Speaker:And again, that's why we like
Speaker:working with clients that require
Speaker:bigger packages that want to work
Speaker:with us in a bigger way because we
Speaker:can actually help them do things.
Speaker:So that's been so satisfying.
Speaker:And then the last thing that I was just
Speaker:over the moon about for this year was the
Speaker:fact that I got gifted some microphones.
Speaker:Oh my God.
Speaker:Like this one I'm using this SEDCMA
Speaker:that I'm using is my favorite.
Speaker:microphone and it's like a brand
Speaker:that I absolutely adore as well.
Speaker:And the fact that I was able to receive
Speaker:these from the YouTube channel, like for
Speaker:the YouTube channel, the YouTube channel
Speaker:was like teeny tiny at that point too.
Speaker:And I still was able to get
Speaker:these beautiful microphones.
Speaker:I have some other things as well
Speaker:that have been supplied, um,
Speaker:for me to review and use and
Speaker:give feedback on, like, that's
Speaker:something that I really want to do.
Speaker:I really want to have that
Speaker:be, this channel is where I
Speaker:go, this is, It's terrible.
Speaker:And this is good.
Speaker:Use this.
Speaker:Don't use this.
Speaker:And I know it's only my opinion.
Speaker:Everyone has opinions, just
Speaker:like they have bumholes.
Speaker:For me to be able to go with my
Speaker:20 years of experience in audio
Speaker:production and help people not spend
Speaker:a thousand million dollars on things.
Speaker:They don't need to be spending
Speaker:their money on has been awesome.
Speaker:And so to get gifted some stuff,
Speaker:which is actually of an extremely
Speaker:high caliber, and I would buy
Speaker:anyway, has been really, really good.
Speaker:So big plug to Essie for this
Speaker:because Essie have just created
Speaker:a beautiful microphone and
Speaker:others in this suite as well.
Speaker:So that's a lot of pros.
Speaker:It's pretty good, isn't it?
Speaker:Like that's a lot of things that
Speaker:have, have gone well this year.
Speaker:Now I'm going to get into
Speaker:the cons because when there's
Speaker:pros, there's always cons.
Speaker:You're not going to have like
Speaker:an amazing year the whole time.
Speaker:I want this to be relatable.
Speaker:I want it to be true and
Speaker:I want it to be honest.
Speaker:So let's get into some cons.
Speaker:One of the biggest cons that we've
Speaker:had this year is in our business,
Speaker:the software options that we have
Speaker:to produce the content that we
Speaker:want to produce are not good.
Speaker:We've got tools, which I won't name.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Some of them are really falling
Speaker:short in, and I would love to be
Speaker:able to create software that I can.
Speaker:We can use that art is for us that
Speaker:we've created that we know is awesome
Speaker:and everything We're relying on other
Speaker:people creating tools and software
Speaker:that we can use in our businesses that
Speaker:work Although a lot of them are good.
Speaker:There's nothing that's right up there.
Speaker:There's nothing that's like yes This
Speaker:works and it works on repeat and
Speaker:it's exactly what we need and it does
Speaker:everything we want it to do That's
Speaker:been a con for me because there's
Speaker:been so many times throughout the
Speaker:year where I've been like, ah, if we
Speaker:just had this, like if we just had
Speaker:this thing, then that would solve a
Speaker:lot of problems and it doesn't exist.
Speaker:It doesn't exist.
Speaker:I know you're probably listening to this.
Speaker:Well, why don't you create it?
Speaker:That just seems like a lot of work.
Speaker:It seems like a lot of work.
Speaker:If you are a person that is
Speaker:a software developer, you're
Speaker:looking for a new adventure, then
Speaker:certainly reach out and we can chat.
Speaker:But yeah, that's been a real con,
Speaker:is that we're not currently at the
Speaker:place where I feel like what we
Speaker:use as software is What I want us
Speaker:to use that the all encompassing
Speaker:tools, isn't they're not quite there.
Speaker:And there's a bunch of
Speaker:AI stuff coming out.
Speaker:Most of it's pretty terrible.
Speaker:I know it's going to get better, but
Speaker:there's things that are slowing us down.
Speaker:That could be sped up by specific things.
Speaker:I won't go any further into it,
Speaker:but that has been something that
Speaker:has been annoying me this year.
Speaker:Another con is AI generated
Speaker:podcasts spamming podcast platforms.
Speaker:Flippin notebook LM, okay?
Speaker:I did a video on a podcast episode on
Speaker:this, actually a couple of them, uh, a
Speaker:few months ago where, yeah, I was just
Speaker:breaking down like, just there's so many
Speaker:AI podcasts now and they're all terrible.
Speaker:They're all terrible.
Speaker:All the ones I listen to anyway.
Speaker:There would be over 2, 000.
Speaker:There's probably 3,
Speaker:000 of them right now.
Speaker:It's just dampening the whole, the
Speaker:whole spirit of what podcasting is.
Speaker:I don't like it.
Speaker:So I found that to be a con.
Speaker:I think the gimmick is cool.
Speaker:There's a certain purpose for it, but I
Speaker:don't think that it belongs In podcast
Speaker:platforms for people to get confused
Speaker:between it being real and it being a
Speaker:fake person doesn't sit right with me.
Speaker:So I haven't enjoyed that.
Speaker:Another con is I would have
Speaker:probably liked to take on one or
Speaker:two even bigger projects this year.
Speaker:So we've worked on some
Speaker:incredible stuff this year.
Speaker:It's a really good, uh, clients.
Speaker:Everything's like working well
Speaker:in that regard, but I kind of
Speaker:want to get to a next level.
Speaker:In that space as well.
Speaker:We've been doing this a very long time.
Speaker:I want things that are a
Speaker:little bit more challenging
Speaker:for me at this point, because.
Speaker:I need the challenge too, you know, it's,
Speaker:it's something that I know that is going
Speaker:to happen, but the projects haven't been
Speaker:as big as I'd like in, in this year.
Speaker:Has meant for a calm year though as well.
Speaker:So, you know, pro and con there together.
Speaker:Another con, not being a hundred
Speaker:percent clear on our next move.
Speaker:There's so many ways that.
Speaker:This business can go that sometimes
Speaker:it gets a little bit like,
Speaker:yeah, but where, like, where do
Speaker:we actually want to head next?
Speaker:Where do we want to place
Speaker:ourselves in the industry?
Speaker:Who do we want to work with?
Speaker:That evolves over time.
Speaker:And then with the dawn of like AI and
Speaker:all these tools that are coming out
Speaker:to speed things up and for people to
Speaker:do things themselves, there's also
Speaker:that, like, how do we need to evolve?
Speaker:To match.
Speaker:So what's our next move?
Speaker:What do we want to focus on?
Speaker:I'm not 100 percent sure on that yet.
Speaker:It's something that
Speaker:I'm still playing with.
Speaker:Like, there's a few different angles.
Speaker:And I know that that's kind of not
Speaker:a con, but I like to have goals.
Speaker:And I don't have my next
Speaker:goal kind of set yet.
Speaker:So yeah, that's been a con.
Speaker:The last one is sitting
Speaker:at my desk too much.
Speaker:I've been sitting at my desk more
Speaker:than I want to sit at my desk.
Speaker:I mean, I have a sit stand desk.
Speaker:I stand, but that's not,
Speaker:that's not the problem.
Speaker:I'd like to get out more in 2025.
Speaker:And that's why I did put the call out
Speaker:just on Instagram, even just to say,
Speaker:Hey, if anyone's doing live events,
Speaker:you want someone to come and speak
Speaker:about podcasting, I'm up for it.
Speaker:I.
Speaker:spent a lot of time in this studio
Speaker:this year and I know that this studio
Speaker:is going to be short lived too,
Speaker:like we'll be moving to a new space
Speaker:in probably six to eight months.
Speaker:I haven't enjoyed this space all that
Speaker:much just because it's small and I feel
Speaker:quite closed in and although that's
Speaker:really good for content creation.
Speaker:Not much natural light.
Speaker:It doesn't suit my personality
Speaker:being so small, you know, so that's
Speaker:something that I'm looking to change
Speaker:in 2025 to get away from my desk
Speaker:more, to have a different setup.
Speaker:That's all going to be a transition
Speaker:phase and I will take you on the
Speaker:journey of setting up the new
Speaker:space when we get there as well.
Speaker:But that's something that's, it's felt
