Podcast Microphone Battle: Shure MV7 vs Rode PodMic

Published on: 23rd October, 2023

I've got two fantastic microphones to pin against each other today. The Shure MV7 and the Rode PodMic. Why the battle, you ask? Well, these babies are essentially cut from the same cloth. They both offer the versatility of XLR and USB connections, and the price point is basically the same. Shure and Rode are both very well known in the microphone industry, and I felt like it was worthy of a good ol’ fashioned rumble!

Before I declare any favourites, I want to make it clear that what you're about to hear is my personal opinion and specific to my voice. Your voice will have different tonality, different inflection and different frequency “hot spots”, so use this as a guide.

We start with some tricky sounds like those with heavy P's and B's to see how they handle plosives. I even treat you to a bit of singing because, hey, microphones are often used for that purpose, and I'm a singer myself.

I read a passage from Gillian Flynn's "Gone Girl" to see how well these microphones fare for voiceovers and audiobook narration. These are crucial considerations, especially if you're a content creator.

Speaker:

Welcome back to my face.

Speaker:

My name is Brianna.

Speaker:

I'm the head honcho here at Bamby Media

Speaker:

and today I'm doing a microphone battle.

Speaker:

I've got two incredible

Speaker:

microphones here in front of me.

Speaker:

we've got the Shure MV7.

Speaker:

And the Rode PodMic USB XLR.

Speaker:

I wanted to put them against each other

Speaker:

because they're essentially the same.

Speaker:

Thing they can both do both XLR and

Speaker:

USB and I wanted to put it to the test

Speaker:

I Have been using the RØDE PodMic now

Speaker:

for a while and I'm loving it Shure

Speaker:

also makes incredible microphones.

Speaker:

And so I wanted to test what

Speaker:

the differences were between

Speaker:

these two microphones.

Speaker:

They're essentially the

Speaker:

same price point as well.

Speaker:

it is switching back and forth.

Speaker:

when I change the microphone

Speaker:

so that you can hear the

Speaker:

differences and the intricacies

Speaker:

between these two microphones.

Speaker:

What I'm going to test here now is

Speaker:

saying some sounds that have a lot of

Speaker:

P's and B's and check the plosives.

Speaker:

Popping the popcorn makes for

Speaker:

a yummy after dinner snack.

Speaker:

Popping the popcorn will make

Speaker:

for a yummy after dinner snack.

Speaker:

Now I'm going to test what these

Speaker:

microphones are like when you

Speaker:

sing into them, because singing is

Speaker:

another thing that people do with

Speaker:

microphones, and I am a singer myself.

Speaker:

some day when I'm awfully low and the sky

Speaker:

is grey I will feel a glow just thinking

Speaker:

of you, and the way you look tonight.

Speaker:

I'm gonna record a little bit

Speaker:

from Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.

Speaker:

I actually haven't read this book yet and

Speaker:

everyone talks about it and I know it's

Speaker:

super old, but I haven't read it yet.

Speaker:

So here we go.

Speaker:

When I think of my wife, I

Speaker:

always think of her head, the

Speaker:

shape of it to begin with.

Speaker:

The very first time I saw her.

Speaker:

It was the back of the head I saw.

Speaker:

And there was something lovely about it.

Speaker:

The angles of it.

Speaker:

Like a shiny, hard corn kernel.

Speaker:

Or a riverbed fossil.

Speaker:

She had what the Victorians

Speaker:

would call a finely shaped head.

Speaker:

You could imagine the skull quite easily.

Speaker:

I'd know her head, anywhere.

Speaker:

Ooh, I'm intrigued.

Speaker:

I want to know more.

Speaker:

This is the book that I'm reading

Speaker:

from, Gone Girl, Jillian Flynn,

Speaker:

Okay, so now what I'm going to do

Speaker:

is I'm going to make this The USB

Speaker:

version of both of these microphones.

Speaker:

And we're going to have a

Speaker:

look at what that sounds like.

Speaker:

this is now the Rode PodMic USB input.

Speaker:

Popping the popcorn will make

Speaker:

for a yummy after dinner snack.

Speaker:

Some the rainbow.

Speaker:

There's a land that I heard of once in a,

Speaker:

Now I'm using the Shure MV7

Speaker:

with the USB input so that you

Speaker:

can hear what this sounds like.

Speaker:

Popping the popcorn will make

Speaker:

for a yummy after dinner snack.

Speaker:

some day, when I'm awfully low,

Speaker:

and the sky is grey, I will feel

Speaker:

the glow just thinking of you.

Speaker:

And the way you look tonight.

Speaker:

Now there is a

Speaker:

Now I'm back to the PodMic XLR,

Speaker:

and this will be the one that I

Speaker:

use for the rest of this video.

Speaker:

What did you think when

Speaker:

you listened to that?

Speaker:

What was your impression?

Speaker:

What was your favorite?

Speaker:

I have my thoughts.

Speaker:

I think the Rode PodMic wins, and it

Speaker:

wins on both the XLR input and the

Speaker:

USB input, but there is one particular

Speaker:

use case where I think that the Shure

Speaker:

MV7 actually beats So, um, yeah, The

Speaker:

pod mic, and that is in the voiceover

Speaker:

slash kind of audio book realm.

Speaker:

If you were recording an audio book

Speaker:

or you were recording a voiceover or

Speaker:

meditations or things like that, the MV7

Speaker:

is better because it sounds more warm.

Speaker:

and it feels a bit fuller,

Speaker:

I guess, in your ears.

Speaker:

The problem with using that microphone

Speaker:

in my So, in that if you speak a

Speaker:

little bit faster, if you're doing

Speaker:

tutorials, you're running things where

Speaker:

you, you have a bit of pace in your

Speaker:

voice, the RodePod mic for my voice

Speaker:

wins because it gives me more clarity

Speaker:

in the way I sound than the MV7 does.

Speaker:

We have clients that use the MV7 in the

Speaker:

USB input, and they sound absolutely

Speaker:

beautiful with that microphone because

Speaker:

they have different sounding voices.

Speaker:

For me, because I have a little bit

Speaker:

of a higher frequency voice, when

Speaker:

it gets too muddy, when it starts to

Speaker:

sound too warm and I speak a little

Speaker:

bit faster, then it is more difficult

Speaker:

to kind of hear me well, I think.

Speaker:

And so for me, for this use case,

Speaker:

for podcasting, the Rode PodMic wins.

Speaker:

And I will always default to the XLR

Speaker:

input because I just prefer that as a...

Speaker:

audio input, and it gives me more

Speaker:

flexibility with how far away I can

Speaker:

be from my actual recording source.

Speaker:

I have a separate video on why you might

Speaker:

need an XLR versus a USB, and I will

Speaker:

make sure to link that wherever I can,

Speaker:

so that you can have a look at that if

Speaker:

that's something you're interested in.

Speaker:

So if you're interested in doing

Speaker:

voiceover work, if you have a voice

Speaker:

that you speak a little bit slower,

Speaker:

You can also adjust some settings.

Speaker:

It's nice that there is that little app

Speaker:

that comes with it that gives you some

Speaker:

firmware updates and things as well.

Speaker:

And you can either do manual mode or

Speaker:

make some other adjustments, uh, there.

Speaker:

So I really like this microphone,

Speaker:

but for my purposes, it's

Speaker:

not quite going to hit it.

Speaker:

I also found with the Shure MV7 that

Speaker:

it compressed on its own a little

Speaker:

bit, and I don't know whether you

Speaker:

could hear that, but it sounded

Speaker:

like a more compressed sound.

Speaker:

When it was in the USB mode, and I

Speaker:

didn't have any settings turned up.

Speaker:

I didn't have the compression on,

Speaker:

it was completely flat with the

Speaker:

way I recorded this so that it was

Speaker:

a true representation on how the

Speaker:

microphone sounds coming in, and that's

Speaker:

exactly what you've heard as well.

Speaker:

But I found that this struggled a

Speaker:

little bit more with sounding a bit

Speaker:

compressed and a little bit more digital.

Speaker:

and for singing as well, I

Speaker:

found that both of them were

Speaker:

quite good with the vocals.

Speaker:

Maybe if you're a singer, go

Speaker:

back and listen to those singing

Speaker:

bits and just ascertain where you

Speaker:

think your voice sits within that.

Speaker:

If you're a male voice, you'll,

Speaker:

you'll sound really good with this

Speaker:

microphone, with the Rode PodMic.

Speaker:

Because it doesn't over

Speaker:

accentuate your bassy tones.

Speaker:

But if you like that bassy tone

Speaker:

sound, that more radio, the hoo,

Speaker:

hoo, hoo type sound, the MV7

Speaker:

is going to do that for you.

Speaker:

So you will be fine with either just

Speaker:

depends on what kind of sound you

Speaker:

want, knowing that you can always

Speaker:

adjust your EQ in post production

Speaker:

if you have those sorts of skills.

Speaker:

So that is my wrap up of these

Speaker:

two microphones, XLR, the Rode

Speaker:

PodMic XLR USB, and the Shure MV7.

Speaker:

I hope you've enjoyed this video.

Speaker:

If you have, if you've got value, hit

Speaker:

the subscribe button, the like button,

Speaker:

follow the channel, and I'm definitely

Speaker:

going to be doing more reviews If

Speaker:

there's anything you want me to review,

Speaker:

then please leave it in the comments.

Speaker:

I read and respond to all of those

Speaker:

and I love providing this value.

Speaker:

So have a great day.
